Antioxidant and Anti HSV-1 Effects of Aradisia elliptica
Objectives: To evaluate the antioxidant activity and HSV-1 inhibition of the crude methanol extract of A. elliptica fruits. Methods: A. elliptica fruits were extracted by 95% methanol and the components of crude extract were analyzed using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The crude fruit extract was determined for its total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging and the anti HSV-1 effect was evaluated by plaque reduction assay. Its cytotoxicity against Vero cell line was tested by MTT assay. Results: The main components of the A. elliptica crude fruit extract were quercetin and 3 anthocyanins. Total flavonoid content was 2.85±0.90 mgQE/g and total phenolic content was 102.05 ± 3.90 mgGAE/g. The EC50 of the curde extract for DPPH was 285.21±0.83 µg/ml. The IC50 of the crude extract for anti HSV-1 was 1.02 mg/ml and no cytotoxicity against Vero cell line. Conclusions: The crude ethanol extract of A. elliptica fruits was shown to have antioxidant activity and exhibit a potent anti HSV-1 activity.
