Bond Strength of Adhesive/Cement System Between Zirconia and Dentin

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement between high translucent zirconia and bovine dentine with and without universal adhesive. The SBS of “PANAVIA™ SA Cement Plus ” (SAC; Kuraray Noritake Dental) with “CLEARFIL™ Universal Bond Quick” (UBQ; Kuraray Noritake Dental) was compared with that of RelyX Ultimate Adhesive Resin Cement (UAC; 3M ESPE) with Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU; 3M ESPE) , “PANAVIA™ SA Cement Plus”, and RelyX Unicem 2 Self-Adhesive Resin Cement(USC; 3M ESPE).
Methods: Extracted bovine teeth embedded in acrylic resin were polished with 1000-grit Si-C paper under running water to obtain flattened dentin surfaces. In cases where resin cement with universal adhesive system was tested, universal adhesive was applied to dentin surfaces according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The rod-shaped Zirconia specimens (diameter 5mm) were prepared from “KATANA™ Zirconia” STML (Super Translucent Multi-Layered, Kuraray Noritake Dental). The surface of these specimens was sandblasted with 50 µm alumina. The cementation procedure was performed according to the manufacture’s instruction in all cases. The SBS was measured after the specimens had been stored in 37°C water for 24 hours at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min using a universal testing instrument (Shimadzu). The data was analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests (p<0.05).
Results: The results were summarized in Table 1 (n=5/group).
Conclusions: The SBS of SAC with UBQ between high translucent zirconia and bovine dentine showed comparable or higher bond strengths to bovine dentin after 24 hours in comparison with the other commercialized adhesive system tested in this study. This result indicated that “PANAVIA™ SA Cement Plus” might exhibits more reliable clinical performance by using with “CLEARFIL™ Universal Bond Quick”.
