Visual Evaluation of Color Adjustment Potential of Resin Composites

Objectives: To analyze Visual Color Adjustment Potential (CAP-V) of resin-composites.
Methods: Test shades were ECM-001 (M1, Tokuyama Dental), Filtek Supreme Ultra A2B (M2, 3M), TPH Spectra LVA2 (M3, Dentsply), Herculite Ultra A2E (M4, Kerr), and Tetric Evo Ceram A2E (M5, Ivoclar Vivadent). Single specimens replicas of denture teeth (n=5), were made using test composite shades. Dual specimens (n=5) were made on mandibular right first molar denture teeth (#30, Zenopal, GC) in each of VITA classical A1-D4 shades with simulated class I preparation (4mm-diameter, 2mm-depth), restored with test composite shades. Polymerized composites were hand-polished for a total of 40 seconds. Color evaluations were performed by three evaluators (0/45° optical geometry, D65). Color differences were graded from 0-perfect match to 4-large mismatch. The visual color adjustment potential (CAP-V) was calculated as follows: CAP-V=1-VDUAL/VSINGLE. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance (α=0.05).
Results: Visual ratings of single (composite teeth vs. unrestored denture teeth), dual (class I restorations vs. surrounding artificial tooth), and CAP-V are listed in Table. M1 had the most pronounced CAP-V, followed by M5, M3, M4 and M2. Fisher’s PLSD interval for single-vs. dual comparisons was 0.05 (p<0.0001, power 1.0), and 0.07 and 0.13 for comparisons between materials and shades, respectively (p<0.0001, except M4-M5 and certain shade pairs). Corresponding intervals for CAP-V were 0.07 and 0.13, respectively.
Conclusions: M1 exhibited the most pronounced CAP-V. The visual rating of color differences between unrestore denture teeth and single specimens were the greatest for M1, indicating largest mismatch, while visual rating of color differences on class I restorations vs. surrounding artificial tooth were the smallest, indicating the best match of M1 with A1-D4 denture teeth.
