SOX-2 Overexpression in Oral Leukoplakia

Objectives: SOX-2 is a transcription factor involved in maintaining the pluripotency of embryonic cells and some adult stem cells and, in cancer cells in the proliferation, tumorigenicity, chemoresistance, and metastasis. However, the function of SOX-2 in Oral Leucoplakia, classified by Binary System was not studied. The objective of the study was evaluate the SOX-2 expression of in Oral Leukoplakia.
Methods: Sixty seven cases of Oral Leucoplakia (34 low risk and 33 high risk of dysplasia, and 25 controls were submitted to immunohistochemistry with SOX-2. In the epithelium, the immunopositive nuclear area was measure by semiautomatic segmentation. One-way analysis of variance, and Games-Howell tests were performed.
Results: Oral Leucoplakia (low and high risk) presented higher positive nuclear area (0.24 ± 0.47 vs 1.09 ± 2.06) compared to the control group (0.00 ± 0.01) (p = 0.01).
Conclusions: The overexpression of SOX-2 in Oral Leukoplakia may be involved with the development of this lesion.
