Oral Medicine Referrals at a University-based clinic in Trinidad

Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine patient demographics, types of oral medicine conditions and source of referrals to the University of the West Indies (UWI) dental clinic in Trinidad.
Methods: 106 patients referred to the emergency and oral medicine clinic at UWI dental school were recruited over the period of 1 year. A previously piloted questionnaire was completed by dental students and interns assigned to the oral medicine rotation, for all patients who were referred for consultation and/ or treatment. Demographics, source of referral, reason for referral and site were recorded. All patients were then examined by the consultant who provided a clinical diagnosis, while other diagnoses were based on histopathological assessment.
Results: The majority (60.4%) was female, the mean age was 47.1 years and 50% of participants were of Indo-Caribbean ethnicity. The largest source of referrals was by private general dentists (46.2%). The most common condition stated for referral was white lesion (15.1%). Lesions were most common in sites labeled as “other” (18.3%) in the oral cavity followed by “two or more sites” (16.3%).The most common diagnoses included: Lichen Planus (10.4%-with 5.7% Erosive Lichen Planus) followed by Mucocele (7.5%).
Conclusions: This study was the first to determine the type of lesions and utilisation of services offered by the UWI dental school. The demand for oral diagnostic and management services is strong. While private general dental practitioners were the largest source of referrals, availability of these services to those practicing in rural areas need to be encouraged.
