Effect of Glutathione on Tooth Discoloration With Silver Diamine Fluoride
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Glutathione (GSH) bio-molecule on the reduction of enamel and dentin discoloration after application of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF). Methods: 120 bovine specimens were used (60 enamel and 60 dentin). For each of enamel and dentin groups, the specimens were divided into three groups according to the following material applications: 1) SDF group as a control group, 2) SDF followed by potassium iodide (KI) group, 3) SDF mixed with 20% GSH group. Half of the specimens were kept in light and the other half kept in dark conditions. The color change was measured using a spectrophotometer (JP7200F, Juki, Tokyo, Japan) at following time intervals: before material application (baseline) and immediately after application, then 3, 6, 24, 48, 72 h, 7, 10 and 14 d. SEM/EDS analysis was done. Statistical analysis was done using repeated measures ANOVA test. Results: SDF group recorded the highest color change under light and dark conditions while SDF+GSH group was effective in decreasing the color change. The SDF+KI group showed an insignificant increase in color change over time. SEM images showed a different pattern of crystal formation between SDF group and SDF+GSH group. EDS confirmed the crystals formed in SDF and SDF+GSH groups are silver while the SDF+KI group showed high silver and iodide peaks. Conclusions: GSH can effectively decrease color change after application of SDF in enamel more than dentin.
