Association Between Composite Resin Restoration and ADHD in Taiwanese Children
Objectives: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric conditions. Many studies have shown that exposure to low-dose bisphenol-A could contribute to ADHD. Bisphenol-A is used widely to make epoxy resins such as dental composite resin. Relationship between ADHD and composite resin is still unclear. We designed a nationwide population-based nested case-control study to figure out the relationship between ADHD and composite resin restoration in Taiwanese children. Methods: We used the Longitudinal Health Insurance Databases from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 14,952 people which birth years were between 1998-2005 who received resin restoration from January 2000 to December 2008 were included. A 1:2 matched control without ADHD was randomly selected from the database by using the propensity score based on birth year and gender. Results: A total of 14,952 people were included in this study and 4,984 individuals were identified as ADHD patients. The ADHD patients in male (78.1%) are more than female patients (21.9%). The average diagnostic age of ADHD diagnosis was 7.45 years old (95% confidence interval, CI=7.39-7.51). The patients who received dental composite resin restoration had higher risk for ADHD diagnosis than those who never received composite resin restoration (adjusted odds ratio; aOR=1.246; 95% CI=0.68–0.93). Male patients had higher ADHD risk then female patients (male aOR=1.278; 95% CI=1.142-1.431; female aOR=1.139; 95% CI=0.919-1.411). In the frequency of composite resin restoration above 8 times group had higher odds ratio for ADHD diagnosis (aOR=1.206; 95% CI=1.099-1.324) compared with composite resin restoration below 8 times group (aOR=1.166; 95% CI=1.068-1.273). Conclusions: This nationwide population-based nested case-control study demonstrated a significant positive association between ADHD and having been received with composite resin restoration in Taiwanese children.
