Cleaning Methods Effects on Physical Properties of Denture Resin
Objectives: This study compares the effects of four different cleaning methods on the physical properties of the denture resin tested.
Methods: Fifty 20mm x 20mm x 2mm square specimens (Lucitone Fas-Por+ Self-curing dental base resin) were fabricated according to manufacturer’s instructions and distributed to five groups for the cleaning methods:
Group A: Immersing specimens in denture cleanser (Polident Overnight Whitening) for 8h and brushing with distilled water in a brushing machine for 210 cycles.
Group B: Immersing in denture cleanser (Polident Overnight Whitening) for 8h and cleaning in the ultrasonic cleaner (43kHz) for 15mins.
Group C: Immersing in distilled water for 8h and brushing with distilled water for 210 cycles.
Group D: Immersing in distilled water for 8h and cleaning in the ultrasonic cleaner for 15mins.
Group E: Immersing in distilled water for 8h.
All treatment cycles were repeated 48 times to simulate 12 months denture usage.
Surface roughness, surface hardness, weight, and thickness measurement were taken at baseline, and at the completion of 12th, 24th, 36th, and 48th cycles. Data were analyzed with SPSS on Repeated Measures General Linear Model.
Results: Significant differences were found among the groups. Group D (ultrasonication only) and Group B (cleanser followed by ultrasonication) showed less change o surface roughness while Group B showed higher surface hardness, less mass and thickness change than other cleaning methods. Group A (cleanser application followed by brushing) shows higher surface roughness, higher weight loss and thickness reduction, plus lower surface hardness.
Conclusions: The four different cleaning methods affected the physical properties of the denture base resin. This study concludes that ultrasound after cleanser application causes a minimal effect while brushing after cleanser application causes a maximal effect on the denture base resin.
