Accuracy and Dimension Stability of Scannable Vs. Conventional Bite-Registration Materials
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of different interocclusal recording materials (conventional vs. scannable) to precisely record the maxilla-mandibular relationship and to compare the dimensional stability of these records after a storage time of 1 h and 48 h. Methods: In total, six groups of bite-registration materials were tested; three conventional (Registrado X-tra, Voco, RC; Futar® D Fast, Kettenbach, FC and O-Bite, DMG, OC) and three scannable bite-registration materials (Registrado Scan, Voco, RS; Futar® Cut & Trim Fast, Kettenbach, FS and O-Bite Scan, DMG, OS). Eight maxilla-mandibular registrations were made for each material using a custom made apparatus with two separate plates that mimic the maxilla and the mandible with a clearance space of 1 mm in closed position. Records were stored at room temperature and vertical discrepancies were measured with a precision dial gauge after 1 h and 48 h. Statistical analysis was performed using 1-way analysis of variance followed by the Games-Howell test. Results: The median vertical discrepancies range from -2 µm (FS) to 11 µm (OC) after 1 h and from 3 µm (FS) to 13 µm (RC and OC) after 48 h. There was a statistical significant difference (p<0.05) between the results after 1 h and 48 h for materials RC, FC, RS and FS but not for OC and OS. All scannable bite-registration materials showed significantly lower vertical discrepancies than the corresponding conventional materials after 1h and 48 h.
Conclusions: The tested scannable registration materials seem to be more accurate and have a better dimension stability than the tested conventional materials. However, all tested materials showed vertical discrepancies that are clinically acceptable.
