Bond Strength Between Resin Cement/zirconia as a Function of Adhesive
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of seven universal adhesive systems on microshear bond strength between bisphenol A-glycidyl-methacrylate (BisGMA)–based resin cement and zirconia. Methods: Ninety-six samples of fully-sintered zirconia (Prettau Zirconia) were polished, cleaned ultrasonically in distilled water, sandblasted and randomly distributed into 8 groups (n = 12) according to adhesive system: 1) Clearfil Universal (CFU); 2) All-Bond Universal (ABU); 3) Futurabond U (FBU); 4) Peak Universal Bond (PUB); 5) Single Bond Universal (SBU); 6) Tetric N-bond Universal (TNU); 7) Ambar Universal (AMB); 8) No Adhesive (CON, negative control). The adhesive systems were applied according to the respective manufacturer’s instructions. After the application of the adhesive system, BisGMA-based dual-cured resin cement (Multilink N) specimens were fabricated using 1 mm (height) Tygon tubes of 0.8 mm diameter. After 24 h of storage in water at 37°C, samples were subjected to microshear bond strength test, at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min (Instron 4444, Instron Co.). Data were analyzed using ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey, at P < 0.05. Results: The mean microshear bond strength (MPa±SD) values were: CFU=18.84±5.14ab; ABU=18.65±4.86ab; FBU=22.02±4.99a; PUB=23.13±2.04a; SBU=19.26±5.65ab; TNU=18.73±5.89ab; AMB=15.57±3.35b; CON=7.00±2.65c. Means with different letters are statistical different. Conclusions: The use of universal adhesive system improves short-term BisGMA-based dual-cured resin cement bond strength to zirconia.
