Effect of “Jilo” Animated Movie on Children’s Cooperation/Anxiety During Dental Treatment
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of an animated-movie modeling (Jilo animation) in comparison with Tell-Show-Do (TSD) technique on the cooperation and anxiety of 4-6 years old children during dental treatment.
Methods: Sixty children aged 4-6 were included and were randomly allocated to study and control group. During the first visit fluoride therapy was performed. In the study group, prior to the fluoride therapy children watched Jilo animation movie and in the control group the procedure of the TSD was performed. In the second visit children received a restoration treatment which needed local anesthesia. In both groups, the behavior of the children was filmed during both visits and on the recordings children's anxious and cooperative behaviors were quantified according to Venham Clinical Anxiety Scale (VCAS) and Venham Clinical Cooperation Scale (VCCS). Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney analysis (α=0.05). Results: The mean VCAS during the first and second visit in the study group was 0.33±0.48 and 0.91±0.44 while in control group was 1.04±0.87 and 1.48±1.08, respectively. In the study group mean VCCS was 0.34±0.56 in the first visit, 0.61±0.94 in the second visit, and in control group 1.02±1.12 in the first visit, and 1.35±1.15 in the second visit. The mean VCAS was significantly lower in the study group in comparison to the control group in first (P=0.008) and second visit (P=0.044). In addition, VCCS was significantly lower in the study group during first (P=0.015) and second visit (0.019). Conclusions: Jilo animated movie has the potential to reduce the anxiety and improve the cooperation of children during dental treatment.
