Bonding Translucent Zirconia With Alumina or Glass Beads and MDP

Objectives: To measure the bond strength of translucent zirconia abraded with alumina or glass beads. Bonding to yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia has been studied with recommendations that alumina abrasion and adhesive monomer application are required for long term durable bonding. Recently, translucent zirconia has been introduced which may require a different bonding strategy.
Methods: 4x4mm specimens of translucent zirconia were produced by sectioning sintered zirconia blocks into coupons. The bonding surface was hand finished to a uniform 320 grit with silicon carbide paper discs on a rotating appliance. The coupons were randomly assigned to different groups where they were either abraded with 50u alumina or glass beads at the following pressures 2 bar or 3 bar at a distance of 10mm for 10 seconds. After abrading, the coupons were sonicated for 10 minutes and dried. Z Prime (10 MDP monomer, BISCO) was applied and allowed to set 4 minutes, dried, Scotchbond Universal was applied, agitated 20 seconds, dried, and light cured (20s -S10 curing light). A tube filled with mixed RelyX Ultimate dual cured resin cement was placed onto the bonding surface, light cured from top and from each of 4 sides for 10 seconds each surface. The specimens were stored for 24 hours in an incubator at 980F and then placed into a Universal Testing machine and using a horseshoe shaped blade, shear load applied to failure at a 1 mm crosshead speed. The shear bond strength was calculated from the bonding area and the peak failure load.
Results: ANOVA and Dunnet-t test. (MPa) See table
Conclusions: Abrasion with alumina particles produced the most consistent bond strength but glass beads show promise.
