Depth of Cure and Contrast Ratio of BulkFill Composite Resins

Objectives: To measure and compare the depth of cure (DC) and contrast ratio (CR) of bulkfill resin composites.
Methods: Materials: Group 1(control): Tetric EvoFlow® (A2, Ivoclar Vivadent); Group 2: Tetric EvoFlow® Bulk Fill (IVA, Ivoclar Vivadent); Group 3: Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable (A2, 3M ESPE); Group 4: Surefil® SDR® Flow+ Bulk Fill Flowable (A2, Dentsply Caulk); Group 5: SonicFill 2 (A2, Kerr). Six specimens were fabricated for each test group. Depth of Cure: Specimens were prepared using a 6x6x8mm mold and light cured (Bluephase-Style, Ivoclar Vivadent) per manufacturer’s recommendations. DC was measured by following ISO 4049:2009. CR specimens were fabricated using a 1mm thick circular Teflon mold. Baseline CIE L*a*b* and Yxy values were measured against white (W) and black backgrounds (B) (UltraScan VIS spectrophotometer). Measurements were taken prior to polymerization (U) and after polymerized (P). Contrast ratio measurements were determined (YB/YW). Data was analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test (α=0.05).

Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, all of the bulk fill flowable composite materials achieved a depth of cure of 4mm. The contrast ratio of Tetric EvoFlow Bulk Fill increased significantly after polymerization when compared to other flowable bulk fill materials.
