Evaluation of the Bond Strength of Fiberglass Posts to Dentin
Objectives: To determine the bond strength (BS) of fiberglass posts to dentin after different surface treatments. Methods: Thirty bovine roots underwent root canal fillings. At 24 h after the endodontic filling, the conduits were prepared with Gates and #3 drills of the DC White Post system, maintaining 4 mm of apical seal. The roots were randomly divided into three groups: the S (fiberglass posts treated with silane), SA (fiberglass posts treated with silane and a hydrophobic adhesive system) and SAQ (fiberglass posts treated with silane, followed by drying with hot air). The posts were cemented with a self-adhesive cement. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h and were subjected to shear tests by push-out extrusion (0.5 mm/min). Data were statistically analyzed (ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: The SA and SAQ groups showed the highest BS values (11.29 and 10.85 MPa, respectively), the S group presented the lowest BS average (7.21 MPa). S group was statistically significantly different from the SA and SAQ groups. Conclusions: Thus, the surface treatment of fiberglass posts influences BS values. Use of silane and adhesive and of silane followed by drying with hot air yields higher BS values.
