Burden of Oral Diseases in China 1985 - 2016

Objectives: Objectives: To estimate the national results for the burden of oral diseases in China from 1985 to 2016 using the Global Burden of Disease study methods.
Methods: Methods: We systematically reviewed the prevalence of dental caries, periodontal disease and edentulism in published studies from 1980 - 2016. The disease distribution was estimated using a Bayesian meta-regression method (DisMod-MR). Years lived with disability (YLD) were computed by multiplying the prevalence, the disability weight and the duration of symptoms.
Results: Results: From 1985 to 2010, DALYs due to all oral conditions combined in China increased 45.9%, raised from 1.28 million to 1.87 millions. The disease burden of oral diseases increased for dental caries and periodontal diseases and slightly decreased for edentulism. The burden of oral diseases concentrated in elderly population and in middle and western China.
Conclusions: Conclusions: DALYs due to oral disease increased over the 30 years highlight the challenge of oral health care. Prevention-orientated care should be emphasised in oral health-care system. Provincial analysis and human resource analysis are needed for more effective public health strategies.
