Marine Extract Associated With Inorganic Bone Matrix to Promote Induction
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible osteoinductive action of a marine nacre fluid extract (ME) associated with a bovine inorganic bone matrix (IBM) by histomorphometric analysis, after their application to the dorsal muscles of sheep. Methods: Eight sheep were divided into two groups monitored for 3 and 6 months. The animals surgically received the insertion of 3 polyethylene tubes (5 mm in diameter by 10 mm in lenght), empty (Sham), pure IBM and IBM associated with ME. Upon euthanasia, the tissue samples with the tubes were collected, fixed (10% formalin) and the content within each tube was carefully removed. Qualitative and morphometric histological analysis were made (total area of formed tissue, biomaterial particles and bone areas). Results: Data were analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk test. Only in the presence of IBM there was bone formation. Total area of formed tissue was significantly lower in the Sham group. Among the groups with IBM there was no difference regarding the biomaterial particles area, and regarding the bone area difference was found only between 3 months animals with pure IBM and 6 months animals with IBM associated with ME. Conclusions: The association of the inorganic bovine bone matrix with the marine extract applied in this study design demonstrated an osteoinductive potential, confirmed by the presence of mature bone tissue in ectopic site.
