Caries Management Among Dental Students: Survey Using the COMB_4_ICCMS™ Scale

Objectives: Colombia has achieved a consensus in cariology teaching for undergraduates in 2012 through an ACFF (Alliance for a Cavity Free Future) initiative involving all ACFO (Colombian Dental Schools Association). The ICCMS™ (International Caries Classification and Management System) approach to caries management was introduced to all dental schools in Colombia in 2014. ICCMS™, derived from ICDAS, comprehends four elements (4D): D1. Determine (Patient-level caries risk); D2. Detect & Assess (Caries staging and activity plus Intraoral-level caries risk); D3. Decide (Personalised Care Plan: Patient & Tooth Levels), and D4. Do (Appropriate tooth & patient preserving caries prevention and Control Interventions.
Objective: To assess levels of Capability in, Opportunity for, Motivation for and Behaviour regarding the ICCMS™ caries management strategy among dental students in Colombia.
Methods: Methods: Questionnaire survey of 605 dental students across 22 universities in Colombia. Levels of Capability, perceived Opportunity and Motivation to engage in caries management using the ICCMS™ approach were assessed through descriptive statistics.
Results: Results: The average value for each of the domains ranged from 3.72 to 4.75 on a five point scale where a score of five indicates the highest level of agreement with each area, suggesting moderate to high levels of perceived Capability, Opportunity and Motivation as well as actual behaviour following the ICCMS™ approach amongst this group.
Conclusions: Conclusion: Students in Colombian dental schools show high levels of Capability in, Opportunity for, Motivation for and Behaviour regarding the ICCMS™ caries management strategy. The curriculum change has been effective.
