Prevalence of Diabetes and Impact on Oral Health at UTSD

Objectives: The goals of our study were to determine prevalence of diabetes at UTSD, assess the relationship between HbA1C and clinical parameters of periodontal disease in patients with diabetes, and determine the medications used by patients with diabetes.
Methods: BigMouth Dental Data Repository Database queries were performed in order to analyze responses of Assessment Clinic and Medical Dental History forms. Chart review of the Electronic Health Record was performed for 180 charts. Charts were divided into diabetic patients on medications, diabetic patients not taking medications, and a group of healthy controls. Demographic data, HBA1C values, CAL, comorbid conditions, periodontal charting, and other information disclosed in handwritten student DHOTEN notes were collected and reviewed.
Results: 47% of all UTSD patients answering the Medical History form in 2015 reported they had not been informed about the oral health link to diabetes. Percentage of screened patients with diabetes mellitus has generally been increasing yearly at UTSD since 2006.
Conclusions: There is a demonstrated need for patient education about the link between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus. Patients with diabetes mellitus are a growing proportion of the UTSD patient population and students have a duty to be prepared for the potential complications that can happen in the chair, such as hypoglycemic attacks.
