Effect of Disinfection Solutions Against Yeasts From Denture and Palate

Objectives: This study evaluated the antimicrobial action of disinfection solutions against Candida spp. collected and identified from upper dentures and hard palate.
Methods: Sixty denture wearers with candidiasis were randomly assigned in parallels groups considering the solutions: C - control (0.85% sodium chloride); SH: 0.25% Sodium hypochlorite; RC: 10% Ricinus communis; CT: 0.5% Chloramine T. The participants were instructed to brush (3 times/ day) and to immerse their dentures (20 min/day) in the received solution. Palate brushing was also instituted. The samples were collected at baseline, after 7 and 37 days and seeded on CHROMagar (100 to 10-3) for counting the colony forming units (CFU/ mL) and presumptive identification. Descriptive analyzes were performed to identify and prevalence of Candida spp.. For CFU (log10) were applied the Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05), with post stepwise step-down test.
Results: Total of 301 isolated with greater prevalence of C. albicans (164), C. tropicalis (66), C. glabrata (48) and C. krusei (5) were found. The SH reduced the prevalence of Candida spp. in dentures and palate while CT decreased only in the prosthesis. The RC only reduced the prevalence of C. tropicalis. The SH showed greater antimicrobial activity than other solutions in the two periods evaluated : 7 days (p=0.008; SH: 0.00 (0.11; 1.89); Control: 3.62 (1.20; 3.63); RC: 4.37 (2.50; 4.41); CT: 3.36 (1.62; 3.67); and 30 days (p=0.004; SH: 0.00 (0.18; 1.96); Control: 3.36 (1.90; 4.04); RC: 4.34 (2.83; 4.74); CT: 3.29 (1.95; 4.19).
Conclusions: The sodium hypochlorite at 0.25% and Chloramine T at 0.5% solutions demonstrated potential use for control Candida spp. in complete denture wearers with denture stomatitis.
