Association Between Peptic Ulcers and Periodontitis: A Population-based Pilot Study
Objectives: Previous studies have suggested that peptic ulcers, including stomach and duodenal ulcers, might be associated with periodontal disease; however, no clear conclusions have been reached so far. In this retrospective case-control study, we aimed to investigate the association between peptic ulcers and periodontitis by using a large population-based dataset in Taiwan. Methods: We analyzed dataset sourced from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. A nationwide case-control study was conducted, including 177,240 cases who had a diagnosis of peptic ulcers and 177,240 randomly selected controls. A multivariate logistic regressions was performed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for periodontitis among patients with peptic ulcers and matched controls. Results: Conditional logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with peptic ulcers were more likely than controls to have been diagnosed as having periodontitis (adjusted OR 1.15 [95% CI 1.12-1.18]), after adjusting for age, gender, socioeconomic status and Charlson commodity index (CCI). Conclusions: This pilot study showed that there was a significant association between peptic ulcers and periodontitis, is able to contribute the confirmatory results of a large-scale, population-based study to the small, cross-sectional studies suggesting this association in the literature.
