Celayense Students Cephalometric Characteristics Compared to Ricketts Analysis

Objectives: The use of cephalometric analysis play an important role establishing a good diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan in the orthodontic patient. Cephalometric studies used in the dental clinic of the Universidad Latina de Mexico (ULM), Celaya, Guanajuato, were designed in populations with different racial characteristics to those who attend at this Institution. Objective: to establish ULM students measurements based on patient, parents and grandparents birthplaces and racial characteristics and comparing them with Ricketts cephalometric values.
Methods: A questionnaire was applied to student community to discard those subjects who had have any previous dental treatment or presented missing teeth. Those whose were selected received dental appointment to attend Dental University Clinic for clinical examination in order to check lateral and protrusion movements, confirm the existence of all teeth without dental treatments, and not more than 2mm crowding. If inclusion criteria was met, lateral X-rays were taken and tracing all 32 Ricketts meassurent using Nemochep 2D computational program. T-test was used to compare both means.
Results: 32 measures were obtained, one was discarded, and statistically significant differences were found in 19 mesuments.
Conclusions: The variations found may be related to the influence of ambiental effects, food, racial characteristics, and chewing habits. Where variability was found could indicate the ability to structure adaptation without negative commitment of the subject, and instead where there is no variation in measurements could be that critical structures could be involve preserving the species. Further studies are recomended.
