Cured Vs. Uncured Adhesive Effects on Sealant Microtensile Bond Strength
Objectives: Adhesives used as an intermediary with sealants should be light-cured before placement of sealant. Methods: Flat enamel surfaces were created on extracted, sound human molars (n = 54) by sequential grinding. Three different sealants Clinpro (3M ESPE), Ultraseal XT Hydro (Ultradent), and Fluorshield VLC (Dentsply), were placed on teeth without a bonding agent (control), or with three different bonding agents (Adper Single Bond Plus(3M ESPE), Peak Universal Bond (Ultradent); and Prime&Bond Elect(Dentsply); each in both light-cured and uncured forms (Total: 9 groups). The teeth were then sectioned into bar specimens and the MTBS of each specimen was measured. The bond strength data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s test (p=0.05). Results: MTBS of the control group (no bonding agent) was similar to those of sealants placed with cured adhesives (p = 0.91), which were significantly greater than those placed with uncured adhesives (p = 0.035). Conclusions: For the tested adhesives and sealant materials, the addition of bonding agents without curing them before placement of the sealant significantly weakened the overall MTBS.
