Instant Whitening Efficacy of a Dye Containing Toothpaste
Objectives: To evaluate the in-vitro instant whitening activity of a new dentifrice containing blue dye and five commercially available dentifrices containing a blue pigment
Methods: Six instant whitening dentifrices were evaluated: one was a new dentifrice containing blue dye and the remaining five were commercially available dentifrices containing blue pigment, Signal White Now (SWN), SWN Triple Power Gold, SWN Men Energy Kick, SWN Men Deep Cool, and SWN Men Super Pure. The instant whitening efficacy of all the samples was compared by in-vitro methods. Healthy human molars were obtained from an oral surgeon, bisected, and mounted in acrylic polymer. The molars were mounted in trays and baseline CieLab measurements recorded. Each tray containing four teeth was brushed for two minutes with a dentifrice slurry, rinsed with 100mL water, and CieLab measurements were collected with a spectrophotometer. A whiteness index, ΔWIO, was reported. The teeth were then brushed with a silica dentifrice to remove any remaining bluing agent and allowed to rehydrate until baseline CieLab values were obtained. All dentifrices were tested on the same set of 25 human molars. Analysis of variance was used to compare the mean ΔWIO value for each product with p<0.05 indicating statistical significant differences between products.
Results: The ΔWIO for the new dentifrice containing blue dye was 5.89 ± 2.43, the ΔWIO for Signal White Now, SWN Triple Power Gold, SWN Men Energy Kick, SWN Men Deep Cool, and SWN Men Super Pure were 1.06 ± 1.00, 2.51 ± 1.33, 2.03 ± 1.70, 3.51 ± 1.86, 2.66 ± 1.54, and 3.70 ±1.15, respectively. The ΔWIO for the new dentifrice containing blue dye was statistically significantly, p〈0.05, greater than all commercial products.
Conclusions: The new dentifrice containing blue dye delivers significantly greater in-vitro instant whitening activity when compared to commercially available instant whitening dentifrices containing pigment.
