Effect of Mdp-containing Silane/Adhesive on Adhesion to Lithium Disilicate Ceramic

Objectives: To evaluate (1) the effect of 10-MDP (MDP) in the composition of silane; and (2) the use of combined silane/universal adhesive in the same solution or in separate solutions on the immediate (24h) and 1-year (1y) water storage microshear bond strength (μSBS) to lithium disilicate ceramic [LD].
Methods: 30 LD CAD/CAM blocks were cut into 4 rectangular sections, and processed as recommended by the respective manufacturer. The LD specimens were assigned to 12 groups (n=5): silane coupling agent (no silane; silane without MDP [MBS, Monobond S]; silane with MDP [MB*, Monobond Plus]); and adhesive system + resin cement (no adhesive + Enforce [ENF]; no adhesive + RelyX Ultimate [RXU]; Prime & Bond Elect [PBE] + ENF; Scotchbond Universal Adhesive [SBU] + RXU. After each treatment, cylinder-shaped transparent matrices were filled with the respective resin cement and light cured. Specimens were stored in water (37°C/24h or 1y) and tested in μSBS (1.0 mm/min). The μSBS data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (groups vs. time) for each adhesive system used and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05).
Results: At 24h, PBE alone resulted in higher mean μSBS compared with both groups with silane but without PBE (MSB or MB*) (p < 0.001). For SBU, the use of SBU alone, MBS silane, or MB* with SBU, showed higher mean μSBS than the resin cement alone (p < 0.001). At 1y, all groups resulted in a significant decrease in mean μSBS. However, the application of PBE or SBU associated with MB* silane showed lower reduction in mean μSBS than others groups (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: While the higher mean μSBS after 1y were obtained when an MDP-containing silane was associated with a universal adhesive, the use of a simplified bonding protocol (a separate silane or separate universal adhesive) resulted in lower mean μSBS.
