Anti Bacterial Efficiency of Sodium Hypochlorite and Apple Cider Vinegar

Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate the antibacterial efficiency of 5% Sodium hypochlorite and Apple cider vinegar as root canal irrigants.
Methods: An invitro study was done to compare the efficacy of Apple cider vinegar with 5% Sodium hypochlorite against Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. The result showed both with similar antimicrobial effect.
In this randomised clinical trial, 26 patients were selected with mean age between 18 and 60 according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Baseline scores were recorded .University Review Board ,Institutional Ethical Committee clearance and patient concern form was obtained . Based on block randomisation, patients were divided into two groups, Group I - 5% Sodium hypochlorite and Group II - Apple cider vinegar. After access cavity preparation, the irrigants were delivered using side vented needle inside the canal 3mm short of the apex.Pre and post operative samples were taken using paper points.Anaerobic culture was done and the number of colony forming units were counted and the antibacterial efficacy was statistically analysed.
Results: 5% Sodium hypochlorite showed higher antibacterial efficiency than Apple cider vinegar but the results were not statistically significant.
Conclusions: Apple cider vinegar proved to be as effective as 5 % Sodium hypochlorite. Apple cider vinegar have the ability to serve as an effective root canal irrigant.
