Effect of Fluoride Varnish and Calcium-Toothpaste in Preventing Tooth Staining
Objectives: Non-uniform and porous enamel surfaces are susceptible to accumulate stains from chromogenic agents. This study evaluated the effect of the mineralizing/remineralizing properties of fluoride varnish and calcium containing toothpaste in prevention of tooth staining. Methods: 20 bovine teeth were immersed in artificial saliva prior to exposure to the treatment. One half of the facial surface of each crown is covered with wax (CO) while the exposed half of ten teeth was treated with calcium GC MI Paste™ in group (C10) and another ten were coated with Colgate PreviDent 5% sodium fluoride varnish group (F10). After calcium and fluoride treatments, the wax (CO) was replaced by a control strip (WO) to isolate an untreated center-strip from wine exposure. Teeth were immersed in red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon; California; pH 3.64) for 150mins at 22°C. Stain accumulation was evaluated utilizing two visual comparison mechanisms. The treated sides were compared to the unstained control center-strip (WO) and the control side (CO) by human observation and ranked against a visual scale developed with variable wine-staining to create four standard values ranging from unstained (grade 0) to heavily stained (grade 3). Results: 80% of fluoride10 matched the natural color of the tooth, gauged by the unstained strip (WO); both with grade 0 staining. 20% of F10 teeth stained in grade 1 yet less than the untreated control side (CO) which had a stain grade of 2 (p<0.005). In C10, 100% of teeth stained as much as the untreated control half (CO); both had equal stain grades of 2 or 3 (p<0.60). Conclusions: Pre-treatment fluoride varnish prevents stain when teeth are exposed to red-wine. Calcium toothpaste fails to prevent tooth staining greater than untreated untreated teeth. Fluoride, in all likelihood, makes the tooth less soluble to wine making less stain.
