Effectiveness of Silver Diamine Fluoride on Arresting Dental Caries

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on the arrest of caries among Vietnamese preschool children.

Methods: A total of 262 children aged 2-3 years from six public kindergartens in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam were selected for the study in 2015. Since 15% of children dropped out by one year follow-up, the number of children used for the statistical analysis was 224. The children were divided into two groups; group 1 (G1) received SDF application once a year (n=96), and group 2 (G2) received SDF application twice a year (n=128). Saforide (Toyo Seiyaku Kasei Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan), 38% aqueous solution of SDF, was used in this study. SDF was applied to surfaces with enamel or dentine caries using a small applicator. Each surface was recorded as sound, active caries (cavity with soft floor or walls), arrested caries (cavity with hard floor and walls), filled, and missing due to caries.
Results: The total numbers of SDF applied to active caries surfaces in G1 and G2 at baseline were 904 and 1222. The proportions of arrested caries surfaces at six month and one year follow-up were 61.9% and 47.3% in G1, and 58.3% and 65.1% in G2. The mean arrested caries surfaces at baseline, six month and one year follow-up were 9.42, 5.83 and 4.46 in G1 and 9.62, 5.61 and 6.26 in G2. The mean filled surfaces at six month and one year follow-up were 0.04 and 0.06 in G1, 0.04 and 0.06 in G2. There were significant differences in the proportions (P<0.001) and mean arrested caries surfaces (P<0.001) between two groups at one year follow-up.
Conclusions: The study demonstrated the caries arresting effect of SDF in Vietnamese children, especially biannual application of SDF.
