Mapping of Dental Dam and Endodontic Procedures
Objectives: For successful endodontic treatment, dental dam is essential for moisture control, reducing infection rate of oral bacteria into the root canal space. The objective of this study is to map endodontic outcomes of pulp capping, root canal, and post placement treatments with and without the use of the dental dam.
Methods: 6 articles using search engines Google and Pubmed were obtained. 3 articles were reviewed and analyzed. Mapping of outcomes was accomplished using Neo4j graph database principles. A transversal graph was developed indicating edge-probabilities of relationships between found variables and outcomes of the three procedures studied. When evidenced, data points were averaged using Shapiro–Wilks at p=.05 significance level.
Results: Mapping of pulp capping treatment involved two relationships, pulp capping with calcium hydroxide and that with an adhesive. Using the attribute 60 days, the outcome dentin bridge formation, with few inflammatory cells present in the pulp, occurred 100% of the time with or without the use of dental dam. However, mapping of adhesive showed no dentin bridge formation but with 80% intense chronic inflammation at the exposure site with the rubber dam, 60% chronic abscesses with varied extension, and 40% intense chronic inflammation at the exposure site without dental dam. Mapping of root canal treatment showed higher tooth survival rates with dental dam (90.3%) than without (88.8%). Mapping of post-placement treatment showed higher success rates (93.3%) with the dental dam than without (73.6%).
Conclusions: Mapping of clinical outcomes with use of dental dam showed higher success and survival rates with endodontic procedures and restoration with post and core. While pulp capping treatment with calcium hydroxide showed no dentin bridge formation with minimal inflammation with or without use of the rubber dam, pulp capping using adhesive produced chronic abscesses.
