Bonding Performance of a New Adhesive “Clearfil Universal Bond Quick”

Objectives: Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc. (KND) has created new amide monomers which are very hydrophilic, that are also able to cure better than traditional methacrylate group. The new monomer are now in a new ultra quick application and universal indicated adhesive, “CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick (UBQ).” The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of UBQ as compared to other commercially available 1-liquid universal adhesives; Scotchbond Universal/3M ESPE (SBU), Adhese Universal/Ivoclar Vivadent (ADU), Prime & Bond Elect/Dentsply (PBE), All-Bond Universal/Bisco (ABU).
Methods: Extracted bovine teeth embedded in acrylic resin were polished with 600-grit Si-C paper under running water to obtain flattened dentin surfaces. Each adhesive system was applied to dentin surfaces according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The cylindrical mold (D=2.38mm, Ultradent) was placed on the bonding surface, and then the composite build-up was done with CLEARFIL AP-X (A2 , KND). After the specimens were stored in 37°C water for 24 hours and after subsequent thermocycling (4°C-60°C, 1min. each, 4,000cycles: TC4000), the shear bond strength was measured at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min using a universal testing instrument (Shimadzu). The data was analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests (p<0.05).
Results: The results were summarized in Table 1 (n=10/group).
Conclusions: The new universal adhesive “CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick” showed comparable or higher bond strengths to bovine dentin both after 24 hours and TC4000 even in shorter application time in comparison with the other commercialized 1-liquid universal adhesives tested in this study. This result indicated that “CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick” might exhibits reliable clinical performance equal or superior to commercial 1-liquid universal adhesives.
