Comparison Between Three-Dimensional Photogrammetries: 3dMD and Motionview Systems

Objectives: Compare three-dimensional (3D) photos of the same patients taken by 3dMD camera and MotionView Facial Scanner and determine differences in linear and angular dimensions.
Methods: Fifteen patients were photographed using the 3dMD and Motionview 3D cameras. The landmarks chosen for the measurements were based on previous studies. The parameters were designed to measure in the vertical and horizontal planes. Linear parameters included upper and lower facial height, facial width, ocular width, intercanthal width, alar base width, mouth width and vermillion thickness. Reliability and measurement error was tested by analyzing five images three times using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). All photographs were then analyzed and values were registered into an excel sheet for statistical analysis. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS statistical package.
Results: ICC values showed excellent reliability as all measurements were above 0.95 ICC. The largest measurement error was average 1.5mm found in the tragion point. All measurements did not present a statistical significant difference between both growth groups. The largest differences were found in measurements involving the tragion and nasion points (>2mm) but deemed not clinically significant. Measures involving landmarks located in soft tissue tip structures (exocanthion, endocanthion, cheilion, and alar points) presented the lowest differences between photographs (>0.5mm).

Conclusions: The calculated measurements were not statistically or clinically different between both photographs. This indicates that images obtained are similar and can be compared within each other.
