Effect of Periodontal Health Status on Cytokine Levels at Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Objectives: We aimed to investigate of marker levels (IL-33, IL-22, IL-17, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ) of GCF and saliva in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus Methods: In our study 80 patients ranging between the ages of 12-19 years were divided into two groups, including equal numbers (40:Control (C), 40:Test (T)). Before periodontal examination, GCF and saliva samples received from each patient with the aid of periopaper and eppendorf tubes. Samples of IL-33, IL-22, IL-17, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ levels were analysised via ELISA. Each patients’ clinic periodontal measurements (probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, plaque index, gingival index) were recorded. Results: According to the results of study; bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level and probing pocket depth values were not significantly different between the the groups. (p> 0.05); The plaque index of "T" group was found to be higher than “C” group and the gingival index of "C" group was found to be higher than “ T” group (p <0.05). Saliva levels of IL-33, IL-22, IL-17, IL-6, IFN-γ and GCF levels of IL-17 ve IFN-γ were not different between the groups (p>0.05); on the other hand; saliva levels of TNF-α and GCF levels of IL-22, IL-33, IL-6 and TNF-α was found to be higher in “T” group (p>0.05). Conclusions: Results showed that there was no correlation between clinical periodontal parameters and duration of diabetes, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in “T” group (p>0.05). Salivary and GCF composition may correspond to systemic state of DM rather than the oral health status.
