Fatigue Effects on Mechanical Properties of Fiber-reinforced Prosthodontic Provisional Resins

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of resin-impregnated glass-fibers on flexural strength and flexural modulus of crown
and bridge provisional restorative materials.
Methods: Two self-curing provisional C&B restorative materials: PMMA (Coldpac, Yates Motloid) and Bis-acrylic
(Protemp Plus, 3M) unreinforced vs. reinforced with light-curing unidirectional glass-fibers (Dentapreg) were included
in the study. The reinforced provisional restorative materials were tested for flexural strength and flexural modulus in
both static and cycling loading.
Rectangular bar-shaped specimens measuring 3×3×24 mm were made following manufacturer’s instructions. The
mixed materials were injected into metallic molds mm (n= 5 or 10/group). The fiber reinforced specimens had the fibers
embedded in the lower third (tensile side) of the bar then covered and allowed to polymerize. All prepared specimens
were kept in water at 37°C for 48 hours prior to testing. Flexural strength and flexural modulus values were acquired
by three point bending test (Instron 5566A). The fatigued groups were subjected to 1 Hz cyclic loading impact with a
peak load of 40N, which is about 40-50% of the static failure load. After 20k, 30k, 40k, and 50k cycles the residue
strength of the surviving specimens were tested.
Results: Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and least square mean regression using SAS JMP11 software. α =
0.05 was used as significant level. The Flexural strength (MPa) and Flexural modulus (GPa) results, both static and
fatigued are presented in the table 1.below.
Conclusions: The resin impregnated glass fibers tested had a significant reinforcement effect on the PMMA and Bisacryl
materials, increasing strength and in-vitro performance vs. non-reinforced specimens.
