Dental Characteristics of Alberta Hutterite Colonies

Objectives: To determine the dental and dental arch characteristics of 16 Hutterite colonies in Alberta, Canada using digital models.
Methods: 562 models from 16 Hutterite colonies were digitally scanned via the Ortho Insight 3D program, and landmarks were placed on dental anatomical structures. Using these landmarks, the following measurements were populated for each model: maxillary and mandibular intercanine, premolar, and molar distances; the heights of the incisal edge to the cemento-enamel junction (IECEJ), mesio-distal and bucco-lingual dimensions of each tooth, as well as the maxillary and mandibular PAR score. Descriptive statistics were used to determined differences in the dental characteristics of each colony.
Results: When comparing the colonies using descriptive statistics, all 16 colonies exhibited significant variance (SD>2) with the inter-arch landmarks as well as the maxillary and mandibular PAR scores. 11 colonies showed variance for a minimum of one IECEJ measurement. In particular, 5 colonies exhibited significance with one mesio-distal dimension (mean, SD): Pibroch colony for the 3.8 (7.73, 2.40), Pincher Creek for the 2.8 (5.70, 2.93), Ridge Valley for the 4.8 (6.26, 2.20), and Scotford for the 1.8 (8.24, 4.89) while 2 colonies exhibited significance in the bucco-lingual dimension: Waterton 3.8MBML and White Lake 4.8DBDL.
Conclusions: The 16 Alberta Hutterite colonies paralleled in terms of which dental and dental arch characteristics exhibited significant variance. 11 colonies specifically presented large difference with at least one IECEJ measurement. Additionally, Pibroch, Pincher Creek, Ridge Valley, Scotford, Waterton, and White Lake also presented variance in the mesio-distal and bucco-lingual dimensions.
