Primers are Cement Specific for Bonding to Zirconium

Objectives: Determine the best combination of surface treatment and resin cement for monolithic zirconium.
Methods: The following resin cements were evaluated: Panavia F 2.0, Rely X Ultimate, and Nexus 3. Surface treatments were 50µm Al2O3 abrasion (AA) which served as the control, Alloy Primer (AP), EA-ZY Prime (EZ) and tribochemical silanization using CoJet (CJ). Pre-shaded monolithic CAD/CAM zirconium blocks were sectioned with a diamond saw to produce 2-mm by 6-mm by 8-mm wafers. Wafers were sintered and abraded with 50µm Al2O3 (45-psi, 10-mm distance, 10-s), rinsed with deionized water for 30-s. Wafers (n=10) were randomly distributed in to 12 groups. AP and EZ were applied to AA zirconium wafers according to manufacturers’ instructions. Tribochemical silanization was produced by further abrading zirconium wafers with 30-µm SiO2 (45-psi, 10-mm distance, 60-s) followed by application of silane (60-s, dried with oil free air). Resin cements and their dentin bonding agents were applied according to manufacturers’ instructions. Resin cements were placed in Tygon tubes producing columns of resin cement 0.8-mm in diameter and 2-mm in height. Tygon tubes were removed after 24-hrs and excess resin removed with a sharp blade. Specimens were stored in deionized water (37°C, 24-hrs) followed by application of a shear force using a wire loop (1.0-mm diameter) attached to an Instron Universal Testing machine (cross-head speed 0.5-mm/sec). Force required for failure was recorded in pounds and converted to MPa. Parametric data analyzed with a 2-way ANOVA, Tukey’s HSD (p<0.05).
Results: Mean microshear bond strength and standard deviations are illustrated in Table 1 and interactions are illustrated in Figure 1. All failures occurred adhesively.
Conclusions: CoJet is specific for Panavia F 2.0, EA-ZY Prime specific for Nexus 3 and Alloy Primer for Rely X Ultimate.
