Self-reported Stale Breath in Dental Patients vs. General Population Subjects

Objectives: Objective: Evaluate the prevalence of self-report of stale breath in international dental patients vs. general population subjects.
Methods: Methods: Self-report of stale breath was obtained from the Dimension of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (DOQ) Project’s aggregate data set consisting of responses to the 49-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP49) from 35 individual studies conducted in Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Slovenia, and Sweden. Question #5 of the OHIP49 asked participants if they have felt that their breath has been stale because of problems with their teeth, mouth, or dentures. The responses to this question were tabulated for report of “any” stale breath (characterized as occurring ‘hardly ever’, ‘occasionally’, ‘fairly often’, or ‘very often’) and for report of “frequent” stale breath (‘fairly often’ and ‘very often’) in dental patients (N = 1996) and general population subjects (N = 3177) of the Learning Sample of the DOQ Project.
Results: Results: The report of “any” stale breath in the general population subjects ranged from 24% (Hungarians) to 60% (Swedes) [Mean = 41%] and, in the dental patients, responses ranged from 44% (Germans) to 72% (Japanese) [Mean = 57%]. The report of “frequent” stale breath in the general population subjects ranged from 2% (Germans) to 6% (Hungarians) [Mean = 4%] and, in the dental patients, responses ranged from 4% (Germans) to 16% (Hungarians) [Mean =7%].
Conclusions: Conclusion: Reports of “any” or “frequent” stale breath is higher in dental patients than in general population subjects. In dental patients it reaches a magnitude that is probably relevant for clinical decision-making and treatment planning.
