A retrospective analysis of prevalence and characteristics of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption in the permanent dentition in a disabled pediatric population: A cone beam computed tomographic study

Objectives: To the best of our knowledge, there has been no study about the prevalence of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a disabled paediatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of PEIR in unerupted teeth of the permanent dentition a pediatric population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Methods: A total of 110 CBCT images and 1183 unerupted teeth were investigated for this retrospectively study. Reformatted sagittal, coronal, and axial slices were analyzed with regard to PIER, affected tooth type and number of PIERs in each case.
Results: The prevalence of intracoronal resorption in the study group was 12.7%, with prevalence in teeth of 1.94 %. PEIR was more common in females (11) than males (3). Nineteen cases were located in the mandible (79.2%), and others were located in the maxilla (20.8%).
Conclusions: PEIR occurred in 14 subjects. This prevalence rate higher than previous studies findings which used conventional radiographs. A higher frequency of PIER was detected when compared to previous studies, most likely because of the use of CBCT images. Pre- increased awareness of this entity may improve diagnosis and allow early treatment.
