Influence of DCC Ethanol Wet-bonding on Radicular Dentin Bond Strength

Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of a cross-linker agent (DCC) used in addition to ethanol in ethanol wet-bonding technique for fiber post cementation to radicular dentin. The null hypothesis tested was that DCC does not influence immediate fiber post bond strength when employed with ethanol.
Methods: 36 intact single root teeth, were selected, endodontically treated and obturated with guttaperca. After 7 days, a 10 mm post space was prepared with dedicated drills and etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. Samples were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=12) according to the dentin pre-treatment procedure: 1)water wet-bonding: post space irrigation with distilled water for 60 seconds; 2)ethanol wet bonding: post space irrigation with ethanol for 60 seconds; 3) ethanol wet-bonding with DCC: post space irrigation with 0.5M DCC in ethanol for 60 seconds. Adhesive was then applied following manufacturer instructions, and fiber posts were luted into the post space and cured for 40 seconds with a polywave LED lamp. 1 mm slices were prepared to perform push-out test and nanoleakage analyses of the coronal and apical region at baseline and after 12 months of storage in artificial saliva. Results were statistically analyzed with ANOVA test and Tukey post-hoc test. Statistical significance was set for p<0.05.
Results: Three-way ANOVA showed that the variables region(p=0.00), aging time (p=0.002) and their interaction (p=0.03) significantly influenced the results. No differences were found between the three pre-treatment techniques.
Conclusions: The null hypothesis has to be accepted since DCC did not influence bond strength to radicular dentin when applied with ethanol both immediately and after 12 months of storage in artificial saliva.
