Serum and Salivary ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in Relation to Smoking and Periodontitis
Objectives: Cell adhesion molecules are proteins involved in the binding of cells to each other, extracellular matrix and endothelial cells. The aim was to evaluate serum and saliva intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) levels in non-smoker (NS) or smoker (S) chronic periodontitis (CP) and periodontally healthy (PH) subjects.
Methods: Unstimulated whole saliva and serum samples together with full-mouth periodontal recordings [plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP%), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), and clinical attachment level (CAL)] were collected from 20 NS-CP, 20 S-CP, 20 NS-PH and 20 S-PH subjects. Salivary and serum ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 concentrations were analyzed using the Luminex®-xMAP™ technique.
Results: No difference in PI, GI, PD, BOP% and CAL scores were found between NS-CP and S-CP groups or NS-PH and S-PH groups. Regardless of smoking status, salivary ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 levels were significantly elevated in subjects with CP as compared to PH (p<0.001 and p=0.001), whereas in serum, higher VCAM-1 level was found in subjects with PH than CP (p=0.002). In saliva, the concentration of ICAM-1 was highest in NS-CP and that of VCAM-1 higher in NS-CP than in S-PH subjects (p<0.008). Significantly elevated serum ICAM-1 level was found in smokers as compared to non-smokers (p<0.001).
Conclusions: Our results indicate that salivary ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 and serum VCAM-1 are related to periodontal status but serum ICAM-1 to smoking status.
