Noni Leaf Paste Accelerate Wound Healing by Reduced MDA and Granulation Tissue

Objectives: Wound healing is a physiological response of the wound to heal itself. However, sometimes medication is necessary in order to accelerate the healing and reduce complication. Mucosal wound healing response consists of inflammatory, proliferative, and remodelling phase, in which tissue repair and oxidative stress intensity are important indicators. Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) is a tropical plant traditionally used to cure many diseases. Empirically, the leaves are used to heal wounds and boils on the skin. It has many chemical compound that may be useful in wound repair process. This research was accomplished to examine the effect of Indonesian noni leaves ethanolic extract paste in oral mucosa wound healing by investigating wound width, granulation tissue condition on remodelling phase histologically, and tissue MDA level in Wistar rat subjects.
Methods: Rats were divided into 2 control groups and 4 treatment groups, and wound were created on the hard palate using 4 mm punch. Paste formulation were made in 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20% concentration, and applied each on oral mucosa wound of treatment groups. One of the control group was without medication and the other was given ethanolic extract of noni leaves in 10% gel.
Results: Wound closure in topical paste-treated group was significantly faster compared to control groups (p<0.05). Semi-quantitative examination of granulation tissue formation showed a significance improvement with noni leaves extract application (p=0.046) and tissue MDA level of wound treated with 20% extract concentration was lower than every other groups.

Conclusions: Topical paste formula of noni leaves ethanolic extract may accelerate oral mucosa wound healing compared to gel formula through examination of wound width, histological appearance of connective tissue, and tissue MDA level on remodelling phase.
