Effect of Silane Dwelling Times on the Shear Bond Strength

Objectives: Objective: In order to achieve optimum bond to lithium disilicate (LSDS), surface has to be treated with HF etch (20s) and silane. Silane acts as a coupling agent between LDS and the cement. Improper application of silane leads to poor bonding and failure of the restoration. Manufacturer’s have introduced silane containing adhesives that substitute the use of silane. The purpose of the present study is to investigate shows the effect of silane and silane containing adhesives on the SBS to LDS after different dwelling times.
Methods: In order to determine effectiveness of silane, LDS disks were polished (320/600 grit sic), no hydrofluoric acid etch was conducted in order to determine true effectiveness regarding bonding ability. Three primers were tested; Porcelain Primer (BISCO), Scotchbond Universal (3M) and Clearfield Universal (KURARAY). Primers were applied on the LDS surface and left to react for different periods of time (30s, 1min, 2mins, 5mins), after reaction time elapsed SBU and CU were light-cured. Bonding to the surface was performed using dual-cured cement (Duolink Universal, BISCO), using ULTRADENT’s method. samples (n=5) were kept in water and stored in oven (36C/2 hours). SBS was measured through a Universal testing machine (INSTRON), values were recorded (Kg), converted to bond strength (MPa), and analyzed (ANOVA, TStudent test)
Results: Results shown in Table 1.
Conclusions: Conclusions: Results shows that Silane provides significantly higher bond strength to LDS than Silane containing Universal adhesives. Dwelling time has an effect on the SBS to LDS, where the longer the dwelling time, the higher the SBS.
Clinical Significance: When applying silane to LDS, it is recommended to wait at least 2 minutes after application to achieve optimum SBS. Silane containing adhesives showed low SBS, thus, they should be avoided.
