Prevalence of Unicystic Ameloblastoma in an Indian Institutional Scenario – A Ten Year Experience With a Follow Up
Objectives: Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), variant of ameloblastoma, has a predominantly unilocular appearance, and tendency to occur in younger age groups. This study was to analyse the prevalence of UA in a 10 year follow up (2004-2014).
Methods: Demographic details, clinical, radiological and histological features, treatment, follow up and recurrence data of clinically diagnosed and histopathologically confirmed cases of UA between 2004 - 2014 were retrieved from the files of Saveetha Dental College, Chennai.
Results: Of 16 cases of UA, 75% were males and 25% were females. Mean age was 21.8 years. Posterior mandible was the most common site of occurrence (62.5%). Unilocular radiolucency was seen in 62.5% and multilocular radiolucency in 37.5% of cases. 37.5% of the cases were associated with impaction. 6.25% with unerupted tooth. Histologically, 62.5% of cases were type III UA, 25% of type II UA and 12.5% of type I UA. 14 patients underwent conservative surgical treatment. Two patients underwent resection. The recurrence rate was 12.5%
Conclusions: UA, is more common in children, and associated with lower recurrence rate. It can be managed conservatively with enucleation and curettage and follow up. Radical treatment approach may be reserved for extensive tumours and those associated with recurrences.
