Effects of Polyacrylic Acid on Properties of GIC Cement
Objectives: In general, polyacrylic acid is mainly used in the acid part of the dental glass ionomer cement which has a great influence on the physical properties of the cement, because of its gelation caused the low storage stability. In this study, we manufacture a dental glass ionomer cement using the storage stability is ensured PAI copolymer, and tried to compare their physical properties. Methods: In this study, GIC cement was made from a commercial polyacrylic acid and polyacrylic acid-polyacrylic acid co-itaconic acid) (PAI) and evaluated in comparison to each of the compressive strength and bond strength. PAI copolymer was used as the poly (acrylic aicd- co-itaconic acid) (PAI) copolymer having a molecular weight, the storage stability by controlling the mixing ratio of a mixture of acrylic acid and itaconic acid with 67:33. Results: Having a molecular weight of 5,000 using the compressive strength and the bonding strength of cement made with polyacrylic acid was obtained, respectively, 70.04Mpa(SD 6.69) and 0.55Mpa(SD 0.22). However, control of the molecular weight poly (acrylic acid- co-itaconic acid) (PAI) compressive strength and bond strength of cement made of a copolymer having excellent physical properties was confirmed in 104.42Mpa(SD 11.19) and 3.5 MPa(SD 0.99), respectively. Conclusions: Results described above, the storage stability of the polyacrylic acid used in the acid part of the glass ionomer cement was confirmed that a major role in the physical properties of the cement used.
