Comparative Evaluation of Fatigue Life of Three Different Nickel Titanium Instruments in Abrupt Curvature with Reciprocating Movement

Objectives: Compare and evaluate the cyclic fatigue life of three different rotary systems i.e.F2 ProTaper instrument, Mtwo instrument and Twisted instrument under reciprocating movement by counting the number of cycles for fracture and total time required for fracture.
Methods:
10 files from each group i.e. ProTaper, Mtwo and Twisted files were tested for cyclic fatigue with reciprocating movement. These files were subjected to simulated canals with radius of curvature 5mm and angle of curvature 90 degree.Size of the rotary files were standardized in all groups i.e. 25 size and 25mm length (ProTaper(8%) and Mtwo(6%) and 23mm length for Twisted file(6%) were used in the study. Files were rotated at 200 RPM with reciprocating motion that is 170 degree clockwise and 30 degree anticlockwise in a custom made experimental set up with simulated curved canal. Statistical analysis was done using one way anova and multiple Tukeys HSD test to find out the significant difference between individual groups. P <0.05 was considered as the level of significance.
Results: There was no statistically significant difference seen among three groups regarding the number of cycles for fracture and time consumed. The mean number of revolutions for fracture of ProTaper , Mtwo and Twisted files were 4231.7, 4895.2 and 4842.2 respectively.similarly mean time consumed for fracture of ProTaper, M two and Twisted file were 540.6, 623.8 and 616.8 seconds respectively.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of the study the following conclusion can be drawn i.e.Speed and reciprocating frequency are inversely proportional to the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) of nickel titanium rotary instrument and There is no significant difference in the NCF of different types of Nickel Titanium instruments namely, Protaper, Mtwo and Twisted files.
