Jikoshu-Kyofu With One’s Own Foul Mouth Odor and Psychological Scales
Objectives: Jikoshu-Kyofu (JKF) (the phobia of one’s own foul body odor) is a subtype of Taijin-Kyofu-Sho (taijin, interpersonal; kyofu, fear; sho, syndrome) characterized by fear of having an offensive body odor in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 ed. (DSM-V). It has been reported that 75% of JKF sufferers have a preoccupation with the mouth. However, there have been no reports regarding associations between psychological properties and JKF with their own foul mouth odor. In this study, we therefore analyzed the causal relationship between such preoccupation with their own foul mouth odor and psychological scales.
Methods: A total of 1,340 female students (mean age, 19.6±1.1 yr old) participated in the present study. A self-administered questionnaire was completed. We used the Keio Self-rating Questionnaire for Jikoshu-Kyofu (Tsunoda et al., 2000). Five groups were divided based on percentiles from low- to high- score groups. As psychological scales, public self-consciousness, rejection avoidance needs, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and social anxiety were used. We also investigated minding about etiquette involving mouth, body, armpit, and foot odors. The Bayesian network was used to analyze the causal relationships among the JKF with their own foul mouth odor, psychological scales, and the item minding as etiquette.
Results: There were significant correlations between JKF with their own foul mouth odor and all the psychological scales used here. The Bayesian network showed that the causes of their preoccupation with their own foul mouth odor were rejection avoidance needs, BDD, and minding mouth and body odors.
Conclusions: It was suggested that those with JKF with their own foul mouth odor were likely to have marked symptoms of BDD and high rejection avoidance needs, and mind mouth and body odors.
