Long-lasting Stain Prevention Efficacy of Whitening Toothpastes in China Market
Objectives: This study compared various whitening toothpastes marketed in China for their long-lasting stain prevention efficacies, using in vitro enamel stain prevention model.
Methods: Bovine enamel specimens were polished to stain-free and the baseline L*a*b* color was measured using COLOREYE® XTH Spectrophotometer (GretagMacbeth®). The specimens were treated with 25% (w/w) toothpaste slurries for 2 minutes. Twelve-hour immersion of treated specimens in human saliva was conducted in a thermostatic plate rotator at 37°C at 20 rpm to simulate in-mouth saliva flow. The specimens were then stained with tea solution (Lipton Yellow Tea, 5% w/w) for 30 minutes and measured for L*a*b*. Decrease in L* (lightness) and increase in b* (yellowness) relative to baseline were compared for a hexametaphosphate-based toothpaste, Crest® 3DWHITE® BRILLIANCE (CWB); three pyrophosphate-based toothpastes, Crest® 3DWHITE® MICA (CWM), Darlie® Super White (DSW), and Colgate® 360 White (CTW); two tripolyphosphate-based toothpastes, Darlie® Expert White (DEW), and Lion® CLINICA® Enamel Pearl White (LCE); a phytate-based toothpaste, Saky® Strong White (SSW); and a sodium fluoride toothpaste Crest® Cavity Protection (CCP).
Results: Results: L* change in order of protection effect (a≠b, p<0.05 Tukey-Kramer): CWB -4.14a; CWM -8.31ab; CTW -10.29b; DSW -10.41b; CCP -10.62b; DEW -10.63b; SSW -11.63b; LCE -11.82b. b* change in order of protection effect (a≠b, p<0.05 Tukey-Kramer): CWB 8.35a; CWM 13.22ab; CTW 15.06b; DSW 15.73b; CCP 16.38b; SSW 17.32b; DEW 17.61b; LCE 18.55b.
Conclusions: Crest® 3DWHITE® BRILLIANCE containing hexametaphosphate provided significantly better long-lasting stain prevention benefits, compared with other tested toothpastes.
