Objectives: Complex problems are the forerunners for innovation. An innovative system to train the trainer and the student in clinical acumen and research networking was implemented.
To evaluate training of trainers in utilizing research, leadership skills and team building along with interpersonal communication and social skills. To analyze an approach to problem solving through evidence based dentistry in graduating classes. To evaluate the principles of critical thinking and problem solving with professional competency in postgraduate class. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted after three years of implementation of the innovative teaching system in the institution. The “questionnaire survey” for the trainers (n=50) comprised of research, team building, interpersonal communication and social skills. The survey in the graduating class (n=50) comprised of approaches to problem solving and treatment plan; and in the postgraduate class (n=50) critical thinking and professional competency. MCQ (Multiple choice questions) format was used in the questionnaires. The format used for the trainers analyzed the acceptance levels of the training system in utilization of research, leadership skills, team building and communication skills. The format used for the graduating class assessed their confidence level in solving clinical problems and formulating treatment plans through evidence based dentistry. The format used for the postgraduate class analyzed their ability to understand specific clinical scenarios and research methodologies to achieve professional competency. The acceptance levels in trainers, confidence level in the graduating class, and analytical skills of the postgraduate class were evaluated based on total scores obtained. Interpretations were made based on their scores as good, fair and poor. Results: The parametric tests of statistics demonstrated significant level of acceptance in the trainers. Significant level of confidence and critical thinking was observed in students. Conclusions: This innovative Training System was found to be effective in training trainers to train students.
