Effects of Sodium Tripolyphosphate on in Vitro Stain Removal Efficacy
Objectives: Dental extrinsic staining can arise from various sources and removal can be challenging. Stain may bind to dental plaque and the acquired pellicle, as well as directly to enamel. A common method to improve extrinsic tooth stain removal with toothpastes is incorporation of Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STP). STP subsequently interferes with stained pellicle integrity, facilitating removal by toothbrushing. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of STP concentrations on in vitro stain removal from bovine enamel. Methods: Eight bovine enamel specimens per treatment group were prepared to P320 ground finish. A fresh mixture of diammonium iron (II) sulphate 6-hydrate and tannic acid was applied as successive layers on enamel specimens, each of which was dried at 40 °C for 10 mins before application of the next layer. Cleaning slurries comprised 15.0% (w/w) Zeodent113 silica abrasive in 0.5% (w/w) Hercules 7MF Carboxymethylcellulose plus 10% (w/w) Glycerol with either 0.0% (w/w), 5.0 % (w/w) or 10.0% (w/w) STP. Water was used as a negative control. Tooth specimen colour was measured spectrophotometrically before staining, after 10 layers of stain application, and after brushing with Oral B toothbrush for up to 5,000 strokes in the Ctrl-16 brushing simulator. Stain removal efficacy was calculated. Results: Brushing with water resulted in minimal stain removal while ~35% of the stain was removed when brushing with 10.0% (w/w) STP after 5,000 brush strokes. Compared with the slurry with 15.0% (w/w) Zeodent 113 abrasives, the addition of 5.0% (w/w) and 10.0% (w/w) STP into the slurry showed increased performance for stain removal with the same number of brushing strokes. No difference was evident between the STP concentrations of 5.0% (w/w) and 10.0% (w/w). Conclusions: The in vitro stain removal efficacy results demonstrate that STP can improve stain removal from teeth.
