Clinical Anti-Plaque Efficacy of Darlie Expert Gum Care Toothpaste

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a new zinc citrate-containing dentifrice (Darlie Expert Gum Care, DEGC) on inhibiting gingival margin plaque versus a commercial fluoride dentifrice containing 2% zinc citrate as positive control (PC), employing a published clinical method of Modified Gingival Margin Plaque Index (MGMPI) and Digital Image System (DIS).
Methods: Healthy human subjects meeting inclusion criteria entered clinical study. After 1 week of washout using the regular fluoride dentifrice, all subjects came to the lab to evaluate the baseline MGMPI. Then 40 subjects were randomized and parallel assigned with test dentifrices for morning and evening brushing; and MGMPI were evaluated at 1-week, 2-week time point. MGMPI evaluations were taking before and after a 24-hour period at each time point, the MGMPI score change represented post-treatment plaque regrowth along the gingival margin over the 24-hour period. Pictures were taken on four front teeth (total 8) up and down the labial at each test time after MGMPI evaluation, and according to the principles of digital imaging, the length of the gingival margin plaque was calculated through digital software.
Results: The MGMPI score change of DEGC and PC were 34.16±18.90 and 40.77±20.93 at 1-week, were 32.76±15.92 and 44.50±23.89 at 2-week, respectively. DEGC demonstrated a significant 19.34% and 35.81% inhibition of dental plaque formation along the gingival margin at 1-week, 2-week time point compared to PC. There was the same trend of digital image data and the statistical analysis showed the testing results from two methods correlated significantly, indicating that the DIS is clinically meaningful in the detection of the gingival margin plaque.
Conclusions: Clinical trial results demonstrated efficacy of anti-plaque regrowth along the gingival margin for a new zinc citrate-containing dentifrice DEGC, and better than PC, suggesting anti-plaque and possible multi-benefit dentifrice for oral hygiene.
