Comparison of Bond Failure Rate of New Fluoride Releasing Adhesive (AdheSEoneF) and Conventional Adhesive (Transbond) – A Randomised Clinical Trial
Objectives: The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the clinical performance of a self etching adhesive (AdheSEoneF, IvoclarVivadent) compared with a conventional adhesive (Transbond XT, 3M Unitek) over a period of 6 months. Methods: Thirty four patients (14 female and 20 male) were included in this study. They were randomly assigned to either the AdheSEoneF or Transbond XT group. A total of 610 brackets were bonded by single operator using split mouth design either with AdheSEoneF (TetricN-ceram adhesive) or Transbond XT primer (Transbond XT adhesive). Bracket failure rates were evaluated using Chi-square test with respect to the bonding procedure, dental arch, and tooth location. The survival rates of brackets were estimated with the Kaplan-Meier analysis. Bracket survival distributions for bonding procedure, tooth location and dental arch were compared with the log-rank test. Results: The failure rates of the TransbondXT and AdheSEoneF groups were 4.59% and 5.25%, respectively. No significant differences in the survival rates were observed between the bonding procedures (P = 0.55). When tooth location and dental arch were analyzed, only tooth location was significant. Posterior brackets were more likely to fail than anterior brackets (P = 0.03). statistically significant difference for the time taken for bonding using both the adhesives were obtained, where AdheSEoneF consumed lesser time than Transbond XT Conclusions: This study demonstrated that both the adhesive systems (Transbond XT and AdheSEoneF) had low bond failure rates and is adequate for orthodontic bonding needs.
