Standardising Egg Shell Membrane as a Semipermeable Membrane

Objectives: The aim of this study is to standardize egg shell membrane as a semipermeable membrane by the rate of diffusion and penetration of nitroglycerine using three media.
Methods: Egg shell membrane,Human saliva,Artificial saliva,Water, Sorbitrate(sublingual nitroglycerine), 0.5N hyrochloric acid,Conical flask,Thistle funnel.Three conical flasks with thistle funnel was used and each conical flask was assigned as A,B,C respectively. The egg shell membrane was secured on the thistle funnel and one tablet of nitroglycerine was placed on the egg shell membrane in each of the flask-funnel arrangement. Funnel A-was filled with 3 ml of human saliva, B-was filled with 3ml of artificial saliva and C-was filled with 3 ml of water .An intermittent finger pressure was applied on the tablet placed on the egg shell membrane to simulate the tongue movements for every one minute for about 10 seconds. After 3 minutes 1ml of the media was added to the thistle funnel and the time taken for the dissolution and penetration was recorded.
Results: The time take for dissolution of nitroglycerine in A is 4:25 ,B is 7:10 and C is 5:40. the time taken for penetration of nitroglycerine in A=5:52, B=14.52, and C is 7.21.
Conclusions: Thus this study is the first of its kind to show that egg shell membrane can be used as a semipermeable membrane for any studies to simulate the buccal mucosa.
